This is complete nonsense as Wii fit is targeted at an older crowd, and most children that I know of are very active. If a child thinks they are over weight it isn't because of the Wii fit, but because of other influences in their lives.
Unless I'm mistaken, it does actually say that the BMI results are less accurate for younger people in the game manual.
The proper way of judging BMI is to send electrical signals through the body to judge fat and muscle - as the TVG review pointed out, Wii Fit would clasify a vertically challenged bodybuilder as overweight because of its simple height/weight calculations.
Peopel shouldn't get so caught up with it and just have fun with daily excercise.
This is actually very funny to me. Not the part about the kids struggling with identity, because that is true this game would damage kids and make them focus on weight at an unhealthy age.
What's funny is that the Wii is actually making games just as destructive as any other platform. Maybe Wii Fit should be an "Adults Only" game.
Truth is we really have to watch what our kids use as entertainment and can't assume someone else is going to monitor it for us. So for now both Fit and GTA will have to wait for my little son as well :)

This could also be because of the cultural differences. My wife (who is from China) is a size 2 in North America, yet in Shanghai she had to buy Large and X-Large clothes, just because the "normal" body type in shanghai is very slim. As Wii Fit is from Japan, this could also be the case, as Japanese people, in general, are of slighter frame than most North Americans.

This is sad, its not good to be telling kids there overweight but we have to face facts alot of kids in the US are overweight, and the BMI makes it seem worse then it actually is, I fell bad that this young girl was told she was overweight when she wosnt but its just a game based on numbers and facts it has no real bases on the indivudual playing. My BMI states Im morbidly obesse just because in 230 pounds at 6'2 even though i lift every day and they dont factor the muscle weight into BMI
This isn't surprising the BMI is horrendously inaccurate measurement of fitness level. I am 260 pounds, I played University level football, and have less then 20% body fat, but I am morbidly obese according to the BMI. I think instead of BMI they should have gone with a body fat measurement, akin to the higher end scales.

Some parents overreacted. BMI readings for children are less accurate. Wii fit aims to improve your fitness after all there would be no use buyinq wii fit if you excercised enough in other activities.
The BMI is less likely to be accurate for people under age 20, and even if you're over 20. Don't trust the game in that sense. Have fun with it, take it lightly, and you'll find you can even feel better about yourself if you do a workout with it daily.
It is terribly immature for people to say that the kid was probably fat anyways, as one commenter pointed out the wii fit does inform consumers/users that the measurements were designed for adults and will be innaccurate for children. On that same note, it is also terribly immature to expect a video game to take into consideration each and every individual case. Wii Fit chose, perhaps incorrectly, to use bmi as a measurement in the game- as with every product on the market it is the responsibility of the consumer/user to use common sense in determining the extent of a product's usefulness. And it is the responsibility of the parent to teach a child what is and is not appropriate in any situation including weight and fitness. Instead of worrying whether or not this game accurately measures the fitness of an individual, maybe we should just focus on the fact that the Wii Fit is encouraging kids and adults to exercise, who may not be interested otherwise, through games and activities that are fun instead of ominous. The Wii Fit in my opinion is a great tool to get instant feedback on your personal improvement in areas of fitness that otherwise are not easily monitored- such as balance. Kudos to nintendo for introducing a product that gets people off there butts and exercising more than their thumbs
I'm 6'4", 220 lbs and athletic, but according to the Wii Fit, I'm overweight. That actually doesn't bother me, because I know all about the problems with BMI calculations. I think that Wii fit should have exercise programs so that you do not have to stop one exercise, calculate how many pts you get then you have to choose your next exercise. That makes me less motivated to keep going. I want to continue to exercise, not stop everytime I do a move.
