Wi Fit causes over £20 million in damage to homes

There's no doubting that Wii Fit has helped many a gamer get back into shape since its release, but a new poll by woman-only insurance firm Sheila's Wheels has discovered that users of the software have caused upwards of £20 million GBP damage to their homes whilst exercising on the Balance Board.

Nearly one in five of the 1,000 women polled admitted to causing accidents while using Wii Fit, including bumping into furniture, smashing flowerpots, banging their heads and of course, pulling muscles.

A whopping 86 per cent of those surveyed said that they either already owned Wii Fit or planned on buying it.

See? We told you Wii Fit was a risk to your health.

The Wii is a dangerous console. I wonder what the value of TVs destroyed by Wiimotes came out to? Nintendo should be sued to get back all this money.

This is such an awful article.

The title of this blog entry is somewhat misleading since it does not cover the article.

If the article represents Sheila Wheels' survey correctly, then the survey merely states that the damage was done "whilst exercising on the Balance Board". Is does not blame Wii Fit for the damage, as it wouldn't be right to do so. After all, if you get off-balance whilst practising yoga with a yoga book, would you blame the yoga book for you getting off-balance?

The damage done was probably caused mainly because the people using Wii Fit didn't have the sense not to do so near flowerpots and the like; you can't blame Wii Fit for that (especially with all the warnings you get during playing, that you should make sure there's enough empty space around you).
Since the survey doesn't seem to blame Wii Fit, this blog entry's headline shouldn't either.

Anyway, I'm wondering if the survey was represented correctly. I can't believe that ca. 200 women ("nearly one in five of the 1,000 women polled") could cause "upwards of £20 million GBP damage" while playing Wii Fit. That more than 10.000 GBP on average per case! Even if each and every one of those accidents involved destroying their complete TV and home entertainment center it would be hard to get such high damage costs...

OK, I've just found the original article on the Sheila's Wheels website, and it's actually completely different from what is said in the blog entry above.

Sheila's Wheels states 2 things regarding Nintendo:
1. "The recent launch of the Wii Fit console saw a surge in the popularity of exercising at home, with a huge 86 per cent of the respondents already owning a Wii - or planning to buy one."
2. "615,422 (2 per cent) women having damaged their TV set - many getting a little carried away on computer consoles, such as the Nintendo Wii"

There's nothing else stated about Nintendo.
So they claim 86% of the polled women have or plan to buy the Wii, not Wii Fit.
They claim 2% of the women polled damaged their TV, of which many, but not all accidents are related to the Wii, not Wii Fit.
They do not at all claim any direct relation between accidents/damage and Wii Fit.

PEOPLE!!! YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE!!! STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR YOUR STUPIDITY AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS. IF YOU'RE TOO DUMB FOR Wii Fit, DON'T USE IT AND STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE.

i think the stat 86% is BS, i reckon 86% of women wouldn't even know what the wii is let alone planning on buying wii fit

My wife and I own a Wii. When we use the Wii Fit, we make sure there is nothing to get hurt on (such as furniture or loose objects). When the game loads there is a screen stating to make sure you have plenty of room.

If you're dumb enough to bump your head or knock something over, then it's your fault. If you get carried away and your WiiMote breaks your tv or something else, then it's your fault, not Nintendo's.

As for those polled who hurt themselves, as far as we know, they could have surveyed 10 people instead of 1000. It could be 50 people instead of 1000, it's easy to perform the poll and word the results in a manner to support your point.

My wife and I love using our Wii Fit. It's encouraged us to exercise and eat better.

It's funny, many people here in America complain that Americans are overweight and don't take care of themselves. Yet they like to criticize the Wii Fit.

I find is hilarious that people are blaming the wii and the wii fit program for damages. I own one, which I use daily. Every time, when you start up, it will instruct you to make sure you have ample room to move around without any hazards. When you start ANY game on a wii console, it also tells you to make sure your wrist strap is on and tight.
If people simply followed the directions they could avoid these asinine mistakes.

This article sucks. You'd have to be a freakin idiot to not be able to stand on a board without falling off and hitting furniture. I've owned my console since it came out and we NEVER had an issue but of course we're not idiots either.
