THQ's All Star Cheer Squad looks to follow Namco Bandai's We Ski/Family Ski as one of the first third party Wii Balance Board-controlled games on the Nintendo Wii. IGN recently caught up with developer Gorilla Games to see how its development was coming along, and it seems like they were pleasantly surprised.
Although All Star Cheer Squad (in which you play the life of an up and coming cheerleader) is aimed at young girls, the motion controls of the Wii Remote, Nunchuck, and Wii Balance Board impressed in their difficulty for what many would consider a "casual" game. Symbols scroll across the bottom of the screen, which players must then mimic in real life. Balance Board controls see players stepping on and off the accessory in an advanced Wii Fit aerobics-style, and even leaning forwards and backwards as part of the challenging dancing routines.
All Star Cheer Squad's modes include co-operative an competitive multiplayer, as well as the option to create and save routines to the Wii Remote, then share them with others. The Wii Message Board will also track your progress and let you know how well you are doing. IGN was so impressed with the dance-a-thon that it said:
..."the gameplay is fun and responsive, even pulling off the DDR-like experience on Wii better than Konami has. Score one for All-Star Cheer Squad in that department.
For the uninitiated, DDR is Dance Dance Dance Revolution, one of the gaming world's most famous and popular dance franchises. All sounds very promising for All Star Cheer Squad's release later on this October.
