Wii Music 'Today's Musical Instrument' #4

As we play catch up with Wii Music's Instrument of the Day, here's the fourth entry in Nintendo's daily series of videos - a piano. Looks like the developer is starting with simple instruments, but with over 60 to choose from, we're sure to be flummoxed in identifying them soon...

Latest Wii Music impressions - is the tide turning?

We think it's probably fair to say that most people who have had hands (and feet) time with Wii Music haven't been all that impressed, but if 1UP's latest preview is anything to go by, that opinion could slowly be changing. Writing about the updated version of the game (which includes the ability to glue your own performances from different sections of the band together) at this week's Penny Arcade Expo, the site concludes:

"Wii Music is hardly a me-too music game, and there's no guarantee that gamers will accept its unstructured approach to collaborative tunesmithing. Then again, everything Nintendo develops seems to turn to gold these days, and Wii Music's simple track-mixing feature seems like a potentially addictive element that could reel in even the skeptics."

Only time will tell...

Hilarious G1 Jockey Wii Balance Board trailer

In preparation for its release next month, KOEI has unveiled a brand new trailer for G1 Jockey 2008 on the Nintendo Wii, which gives Balance Board owners the chance to immerse themselves by mimicking the juddering motions of a jockey on the back of their horse throughout races.

Another poor person has been forced into horse riding gear to demonstrate this, and far as trailers go, this one is awful… brilliantly so!

Olivia Newton John to promote Wii Fit in Australia

There seems like no better way to promote your product than to have it associated with famous people. Nintendo's used the likes of Patrick Stewart and Carrie Underwood so far, and in the case of Australian women who know every single word of Grease by memory, they're about to be well and truly reeled in by Olivia Newton John and Pat Farrar.

Starting from this Sunday, August 31, the following advert, reports Aussie Nintendo, will be screened down under in promotion of Wii Fit.

Don King Presents: Prizefighter Wii delay explained

Earlier on today we were able to confirm (via the words of 2K Sports forum admin Ronnie James), that the Nintendo Wii build of boxing sim Don King Presents: Prizefighter was still in the works, following post-delay fears that it had been canned.

Asked for a reason to explain the wait from September 2008 to March 2009, James explained to Balance Board Blog:

"Wii production generally takes longer and the game wasn't ready to go. I am sure the lack of polish on the 360 version made this imperative."

If the Nintendo Wii version of Prizefighter's delay means a better end product for it after a disappointing 360 effort, then kudos to 2K Sports for wanting to strive for better. ...Not that any of that will please 360 owners of the game, who have just been told that they won't be receiving a patch to fix its original niggles.

Skate It Wii to include custom park builder

Looking forward to Skate It on the Nintendo Wii? By the looks of it, you're not the only one. In a recent progress report on the Balance Board-supported title, IGN explains that it came away from their time with the game "very excited for the final product."

The website also reveals that you'll be able to create your very own skating environments in a mode called MySpots - locations complete with all the ramps and rails you've ever (half) pipe dreamed of. They can be placed wherever you like, all ready for some belly-churning stunts to be performed on them...

...all helped along with the Balance Board trick control system, of course.

Prizefighter Wii still alive, "totally different" to 360 build

Earlier on this month, 2K Sports delayed (without explanation thus far) Don King Presents: Prizefighter for the Nintendo Wii. Originally planned for release next month, the Balance Board-supported title has now been pushed back until March 2009.

Such a long delay led many to believe that the Nintendo Wii build was destined for the trash can (particularly as the Xbox 360 version wasn't received brilliantly), but a 2K Sports message board admin has now confirmed that it is still in the works, albeit with a different publisher or developer (it isn't too clear which) at the helm:

"There are still plans for the release of the Nintendo Wii version which is being made by a different publisher, and more news on that game is forthcoming," explained forum head honcho Ronnie James. In a later post, he adds, "Actually, it is a different developer... the Wii version looks totally different so we'll see how it goes."

Don King Presents: Prizefighter, 2K promises, uses the Wii Balance Board to provide an exhausting boxer's workout. As soon as we hear anything further about its development, we'll let you know.

Skate It European release date spied?

There's a list of rumoured European release dates for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS doing the rounds at the moment, and in amongst them it is noted that, apparently, Electronic Arts' Skate It will be released in the region on November 20.

There are no such specific dates for other Wii Balance Board-supported games, but Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip and Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party are there too, both given 'November' launch windows.

Certainly makes sense, given that they'll all want to capitalise on the Christmas rush. We'll keep you updated on any new info. Until then, check out our list of Wii Balance Board games to see the current estimated release dates for all compatible titles.

"Constant supply" of Wii Fit stock 'til Xmas says Nintendo

Still can't find Wii Fit in stock anywhere? We feel your pain, dear reader - it's still super difficult to find at the moment, even more so than a compliment between the USA and Russia. Nintendo, however, is adamant that the exergame is out there, and that there will be plentiful supply of the software and Balance Board throughout the summer and into the Christmas period.

A spokesperson for the firm said this week:

“Nintendo had a substantial supply nationwide for launch, though some stores saw spot shortages due to unprecedented demand for this unique product. The consumer response to ‘Wii Fit’ at launch was historically exceptional when compared with peripheral-based video game products. We are providing retailers with a constant supply of ‘Wii Fit,’ so you should see a regular supply of ‘Wii Fit’ on store shelves as we move through the summer and into the holidays.”

Is Wii Fit becoming easier to find around and about where you live? Let us know in the comments section below.

IGN "not sold" on Skate It Balance Board controls

Electronic Arts' Skate It was amongst the games discussed in IGN's latest Voice Chat podcast, and of course, the topic of Balance Board use was mentioned. Whilst still not fully convinced by the new-fangled controls just yet, the website's Matt Casamassina did admit that he preferred them over the Wii Remote-only option:

"I'm not sold..." the Nintendo site editor says. "I like the concept of playing with the Wii Balance Board... I kinda favour that over just waggling around with the Wii Remote. I would wanna do the real deal, though, get my feet on there and kinda mess around that way because it just feels like you're taking full advantage of all the Wii-ness."

We're bound to hear more in-depth opinion about Skate It's Balance Board option soon, so we'll be keeping a close eye.

Skate It wins Best Wii Game at GC 2008

The Leipziger Messe has been trawling the floors of the Leipzig Convention Centre this past few days and has, for the sixth year running, plucked out the very best of videogaming that the show has to offer. And best Nintendo Wii title? It was Electronic Art's Skate It.

The Messe concluded:

"The Wii Fit Balance Board can do much more than just aerobics and yoga: by shifting weight and skilful use of the Nunchuk, the player carries out the most amazing tricks in (four) virtual roles. A genuine skater feel is created on the run through half-pipes and over ramps. "Skate it" gives an authentic and original recreation of the trend sport and benefits from the special features of the Nintendo console."

Congratulations to Skate It. Take a bow.

Rare: Only Miyamoto could get away with Wii Fit

It seems that no one was more surprised at the concept of Wii Fit and the Balance Board than videogames developers themselves. And now senior developer at Rare's (once owned by Nintendo and famous for Golden Eye on the Nintendo 64) Nick Burton has explained just how taken aback he was with it, and how it was only something Shigeru Miyamoto could have got away with:

"I would have loved to have been in the initial pitch meeting for that [Wii Fit]; especially if it hadn't have been Miyamoto.

'So, we've got these scales, right, and you stand on them, and it weighs you, but it's got two scales, so it can detect your balance a bit, and you kind of do callisthenics and Yoga on it.'

You can just see some publisher going ‘Right, you know where the door is.’ But then, that's sometimes where that true greatness comes from, as we've seen."

Too right, Burton.

EA Sports on Wii Balance Board support: "stay tuned"

Electronic Arts has dropped numerous hints about its plans to use the Wii Balance Board in upcoming titles besides Skate It, and today EA Sports head honcho Peter Moore teased us all again, telling Revogamers in relation to using the accessory in a more physical capacity:

“There’s a great opportunity for EA Sports to play a big role in what I think it’s the next wave, which is ‘health and wellness”. “You can imagine we’re working with the Wii Fit Board” “I agree (the board itself) it’s more about balance and coordination, but I think it’s an opportunity to use it as well for bigger movements, stuff as really good as make you sweat. When you combine Sports to that… it’s a huge opportunity, but… stay tuned”

Don King Presents: Prizefighter Wii loses online play?

Back in June, a box art for Don King Presents: Prizefighter appeared with the blue Nintendo Wi-Fi logo floating in its top-left corner, prompting us to rumour that the boxing simulator could become the Nintendo Wii's first online Wii Balance Board game.

However, today an updated version of the box art(right) for the Balance Board-supported games sees the logo removed, suggesting that either the original art was a mistake or that developer 2K Sports has in fact removed Wi-Fi play altogether. A footnote does say that it isn't the finalised version of the box, but hm, we're not confident Wi-Fi will be returning.

If online play has been omitted, it would prove another upset on the title's Rocky road to (inexplicably thus far) the Wii, following the developer's recent decision to delay Prizefighter from October 2008 until March 2009.

Shaun White Snowboarding Wii a "must try"

Shaun White Snowboarding will be one of the Wii Balance Board's showpieces when it arrives this holiday season, and according to Ubisoft boss Yannis Mullat, the accessory's compatibility with the game makes it a "must try" experience:

The following is a quote from the interview with Mallat with Gamasutra:

"And the Balance Board, also. Do you feel comfortable making games that would require these peripherals?

YM: Oh yeah, totally. It's extensions -- to get a wide audience with new peripherals in order to interact with a game. I cannot help but think of Shaun White Wii, which is definitely a must-try. It's so intuitive.

You don't need your brain to do that interpolation work, because it's so seamless, and then you immerse yourself into that experience. Oh yeah, definitely. It's really good.

How to cheat at Wii Fit

Cheating at Wii Fit defeats the very object of the game, but we all know how awful it feels to get half way through an exercise, feeling like quitting, but knowing that if you do that no minutes won't be totted up in your piggy bank.

So if you are determined to trick the system into thinking you're working up a sweat when you're really just munching away on a cheeseburger or something, Wired magazine tells you how. For example:

Run: Jogging in place with a Wiimote in your back pocket isn't really going to buff you up anyway, so why not lie on the couch while you "work out"? When prompted to run, bounce the pointer end of the Wiimote against your leg at a steady clip.

If you've fallen in love with Wii Fit over the past couple of months (particularly in its ability to help the extra pounds fall off your increasingly shrinking frame), then what better way than to show your appreciation off with a Wii Fit... reusable carrier bag?

It's available on Amazon's Canadian website for a measely $1.99 CDN, and we reckon that's a price worth paying to be the hippest/fittest person in the supermarket time and time again.

Balance Board drums "jewel in the crown" of Wii Music

....even if the controls are a little complex! That's according to NGamer magazine, who preview the Balance Board-supported title as part of their E3 Media and Business Summit coverage in their latest issue. They write:

"Deep enough for the game to support an entire course of drum lessons and contained in its own practice mode, the kit is certainly fiddly stuff...[lots of complex Wii/Nunchuck controls]. Now slide a Balance Board under that mental image, with a left-foot tap stamping the trap set and the right bashing the bass pedal.

That the audience cheer when you clash the cymbal is a nice touch, but they're presumably only doing it because they're so agog that you actually worked out how to pull it off at all.

Still, the rest of the look ahead to Wii Music is very much positive.

Skate It will be at GC 2008 after all!

It was looking like Electronic Arts was not going to be spreading any Wii Balance Board love at next week's Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, with Skate It not appearing on a previously released list of the games it was to be showing off.

However, Electronic Arts' German website's GC 2008 website does mention Skate It amongst the developer's line-up - to be shown in Hall 3, Booth BO2 to be exact.

GC 2008 kicks off next week, and if Skate It does show, we'll make sure you know about it.

Even Nintendo reps look stupid using Wii Fit

We watched the following video and instantly felt better about ourselves. It's of a angelic Nintendo rep, dresssed in her crisp, white tracksuit demonstrating Wii Fit's Hula Hoop game, and its reassurance that even those most qualified to show off what the exer-game has to offer still can't stop themselves from looking ridiculous to onlookers in the process:

Best Buy urges Wii Balance Board replacement plan

The Wii Balance Board is a very sturdy piece of kit, capable of withstanding weights of over 600 pounds, but Best Buy is urging consumers that they really shouldn't take the risk that it may buckle and break under your mass.

For just $12.99, the firm is offering a Product Replacement Plan should your Balance Board go kaput whilst you fight the flab with Wii Fit. Oh, and a "Have Fun!!" message.

Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 box art

Following the tentative news that Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 will be released in North America on October 06, we've managed to track down the game's sporty-looking box art.

None too surprisingly, Ms Michaels takes pride of place where artwork is concerned, where she's seen in a number of mid-exercise poses.

And of course, there's a picture of the Wii Balance Board and the magic words, "Wii Balance Board Compatible."

All Star Cheer Squad, um, Cheerleader dated for Europe

Following the tentative release date given to THQ's All Star Cheer Squad in North America yesterday, the developer has announced that its Balance Board-supported dance-em-up will bop into Europe sometime in the month of November.

To confuse matters a little bit (and play havoc with our reporting of the game), the title has also been given a slightly different name in Europe - All Star Cheerleader.

If you're a fan of Namco's We Ski/Family Ski and fancy getting your icy mitts on some more winter-themed Balance Board action, then RTL's Ski and Shoot and Winter Sports 2 - The Next Challenge could be what you're looking for.

Raving Rabbids re-visits Olympic Games

We've already seen Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids competing in the sprinting and hammer throwing events at the Beijing Olympic Games, and now they're back to show us their zany approach to fencing and swimming.

We're not sure that substituting a mesh-protected helmet with a Chinese lantern is the best method of protection in fencing, really. But on the upside, we're loving the 'Bwaaaaah!' swimming costume.

It's all in aid of promoting Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party for the Nintendo Wii, which is tentatively down for release on November 11 in the US, and will hit Europe before this year's out.

SEGA working on Wii Balance Board games

SEGA has confirmed that it has games that make use of the Wii Balance Board in development. During an interview with Venture Beat, SEGA of America president Simon Jeffrey was asked about his view on the success of Wii accessories and the company's plans to exploit them:

"VB: Accessories never really sold well with the consoles. Are some selling well enough on the Wii so that you will make games that exploit them?

SJ: We are fans of the Wii Zapper. Our “Ghost Squad” game keeps selling. We have more Zapper games going. The same for the Wii Balance Board, although we have nothing announced yet."

Super Monkey Ball with the Wii Balance Board? C'mon, it's gotta happen. And there was also rumour that Jet Set/Grind Radio could also return on Wii...

Skate It Wii release date kickflips into view

Of all the third party developers that have taken the Balance Board under their wings, it appears that Electronic Arts has been one of the most ambitious, exemplified by its 'zonal' trick controls in the upcoming Skate It for the Nintendo Wii.

By splitting the Balance Board's surface into four different areas, players will be able to skate along and perform a wide variety of stunts in Skate It, which is set in the destroyed city of San Velona.

And now word has it that the game will ollie into North American stores on November 17. It's a tentative date mind you, so don't be too surprised if it shifts a little between now and then.

We will, of course, update you should such a thing happen.

Shaun White Snowboarding Wii release date set?

As far as Wii Balance Board support and solid third party support, Nintendo is putting a lot of faith in Ubisoft and Shaun White Snowboarding. Indeed, the firm hired the main man himself to demonstrate the title at last month's E3 Media and Business Summit.

And thanks to a recently released list of updated dates for game launches, word has it that Shaun White Snowboarding will be sliding into North American stores on October 15.

This date is subject to change at the moment, but being a good few weeks before Christmas, we wouldn't be surprised if it sticks. Want your snowboard design to feature in the wintery sim? Click here for details.

Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 release date?

Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009 looks to be the first third party game to offer any sort of competition to Wii Fit, and according to a recently updated list of release dates, it will be sprinting into North American stores on October 06 - although this could change between now and then (as often happens).

With support of the Wii Balance Board, Fitness Ultimatum 2009 sees players attending Michaels' boot camp, where she'll put you through your paces in a variety of activities ranging from canoeing to log jumping.

Like Wii Fit, you'll be able to track your progress and weight loss on a handy in-game chart.

Imagine: Party Babiez release date spotted

It is perhaps the Nintendo Wii's least talked about Wii Balance Board-supported game, but Ubisoft's upcoming Imagine: Party Babiez, categorised as an 'Educational Simulator' in which players take care of little 'uns and play games with them, has been provided a tentative release date of October 28.

Ubisoft's Imagine series (aimed at a younger, female audience) has performed particularly well on the Nintendo DS, so they'll no doubt want to repeat that success on its home console cousin.

Don King Presents: Prizefighter Wii delayed

Don King Presents: Prizefighter was released on the Microsoft Xbox 360 (to, it has to be said, mixed reviews) back in June of this year. Still, with Balance Board training tasks in the Nintendo Wii version, we were looking forward to its Autumn 2008 release...

...but now it appears that the title's launch on the Wii has been pushed back quite considerably, all the way until, according to the game's official website, March 2009.

Hopefully we'll hear word from 2K Sports about the reasons for delay in due course.

Beijing Olympics give Wii Fit sales a boost?

Wii Fit has once again shot to the top of the UK videogames charts as sporadic amounts of stock arrive on the European island.

And while Nintendo's exer-gaming title may very well have reached the peak of the charts on its own accord, some reports also suggest that the start of the Olympic Games in China this week have given the game a timely boost.

Wii Fit was released in Britain and the rest of Europe some 14 weeks ago, and is still selling extremely well.
