Wii Balance Board sales close to PS3s

It's not the type of news that will overly worry Sony, but is slightly embarrassing nonetheless. During Nintendo's keynote speech at GDC, the company's president Satoru Iwata revealed that the number of Wii Balance Boards sold is almost the same as the number of Sony PS3s.

The bar graph to the right demonstrates just how close the figures are. The top two lines are the Wii and Xbox 360, followed by the PS3 and Wii Balance Board respectively.

Such huge sales certainly bode well for developers who might be thinking about supporting the Wii Balance Board in future. =)

Wii Balance Board wake boarding on the way?

If the conversations that IGN eavesdropped at the recent Game Developers Conference is anything to go by, then a Wii Balance Board-supported wake boarding game may be on its way.

Writing about a conversation between business types and presumed game developers, IGN writes:

"They got to talking about the platform and then the suits asked for more information on a wake-boarding game, which they said they were very interested in. One of the shy guys explained that it was designed specifically to work with the Wii Balance Board, which seemed to impress the men across from him."

Rock 'N Roll Climber supports Wii Balance Board

Rock 'N Roll Climber for the Nintendo Wii will support the Wii Balance Board, it has been confirmed today. The news was broken by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata at his keynote speech at the Game Developer's Conference.

Developed by Giles Goddard, the man behind 1080 Snowboarding, Rock 'N Roll Climber sees players using the Wii Balance Board to help them scale vertical walls.

The 'Rock 'N Roll' part of the name comes from the fact that, as was demonstrated at GDC, you'll be rockin' out on guitar when you've climbed to the top of a wall - bizarre but true!

We'll bring you more information as we get it!

Don King Boxing Wii Developer Diary #1 - Controls

Garrett Bittner, one of the associate producers of Don King Boxing on Wii has kicked off a series of Developer Diaries for the upcoming Wii Balance Board-supported boxing sim, the first which concentrates the game's controls. He says of the Wii Balance Board:

"The Wii Balance Board has given us another tool to increase the immersion of Don King Boxing. The great thing about making a boxing game for the Wii is that players can really be a part of the game as they move their arms and hands to punch and defend. The balance board ups the ante for this since the player can now involve their whole body in the game. Leaning, ducking, dodging and weaving become more than just button presses and become real motions that the player can perform."

Wii Balance Board FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any burning questions about the Wii Balance Board, then hopefully this Wii Balance Board FAQ will answer them for you, whether it's about a Wii Fit sequel or Wii Balance Board Accessories, or anything else. If you think we've missed anything, please get in touch!

Is there a maximum weight limit for the Wii Balance Board?

Yes. The US/UK/Australian versions of the Wii Balance Board support up to 150kg (330lbs). The Japanese version, meanwhile, supports 136kg (300lbs).

Can you use multiple Wii Balance Boards at once?
No. The official line is that multiple Wii Balance Board cannot be linked for multiplayer action together. For now, it's just a case of taking turns.

Will the Wii Balance Board work on a carpet?
Yes. The Wii Balance Board should be fine for use on most carpets, but if you have thick pile, then it could accidentally hit the Wii Balance Board's power switch. If this happens, you may want to consider investing in a Wii Balance Board mat or Riiser's Wii Balance Board foot extensions.

Can I get a rechargeable battery pack for the Wii Balance Board?
Yes, there are many Wii Balance Board rechargeable battery packs on the market. Take a look at a list of all of them on our Wii Balance Board Accessories page.

Can I get a cover for my Wii Balance Board?
Yes, there are many Wii Balance Board covers and silicone sleeves on offer, in all kinds of different designs. Visit our Wii Balance Board Accessories page to see them all.

Can I buy a Wii Balance Board separately, without buying Wii Fit?
No, not at the moment - not an official Wii Balance Board, anyway. You may be able to pick one up separately on eBay or plump for a third party offering, but so far the only way to get a Balance Board is with Wii Fit.

What it the Wii Balance Board's battery life?
Requiring 4 AA batteries (alkaline is best), the Wii Balance Board's power should last around 60 hours with normal use.

What is the weight and dimensions of the Wii Balance Board?
The Wii Balance Board Board weighs 3.5kg (approx. 8lb) without batteries. The dimensions of the Wii Balance Board is 511mm (20.1in) wide by 316mm (12.4in) long by 53.2mm (2.1 in) depth.

How many games use, support or are compatible the Wii Balance Board?
Many games use the Wii Balance Board. For a full list, please see our Wii Balance Board Games page.

My Wii Balance Board is broken / stopped working. What shall I do?
We'd recommend getting in touch with Nintendo's Customer Service. Hopefully they can sort you out. :)

When will Wii Fit 2 be released?
Nintendo has given no sign of when or if a Wii Fit sequel will be released (other than this rumour), but we'll bring you all the news as we get it. Subscribe to our RSS Feed for the latest.

Where can I buy Wii Fit Accessories?
There are many accessories available for Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board. Please visit our Wii Balance Board Accessories page for a full list.

How can I raise the height of my Wii Balance Board?
Yes. A product called the Wii Balance Board Riiser has recently been released, increasing the height of the Wii Balance Board to that of a proper stepper. You can purchase it from Amazon.com - click here.

Will MotionPlus kill the Wii Balance Board?

When the Wii Balance Board and Wii Fit launched together last spring, there was excitement and anticipation in many quarters about the potential of the device to really inject some magic into immersive gaming - being able to step into World of Warcraft-esque adventures and pipe dreams of Mirror's Edge-alike parkour action amongst others.

Click below to read more!

The reality has been that the vast majority of games have either supported the Wii Balance Board as an optional extra in certain modes, or simply adapted it to ideas where its weight-detecting ability is most easily applied - see the likes of Skate It, We Ski, and Shaun White Snowboarding.

No developer has really taken a leap of faith with the Balance Board in order to create something really imaginative and unique. And looking at the line-up of 2009's Balance Board-compatible games announced so far, this trend of playing it safe prevails with Marble Saga: Kororinpa, EA Sports Active and Cardio Workout to name but three not looking likely to cause much of a surprise.

With the innovation of Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus nearing and all of the new opportunities it opens up for developers, could it be that the Wii Balance Board's potential is doomed to made little of (or made of even less) in future? High Voltage did half-jokingly mention that they thought about including the Wii Balance Board in its upcoming first-person shooter The Conduit, but that idea never materialised, and we've not heard a peep out of any other developer stepping up with something more imaginative. That said, there's nothing there to stop other developers going for it - even combining the technologies of MotionPlus and the Balance Board.

Nintendo itself cannot be ignored either. To introduce the Balance Board and utilise it only in Wii Fit and Wii Music really isn't good enough for all of the millions who have shelled out, so here's hoping that the rumours that it adds to the Punch-Out!! Wii experience do eventually materialise. We wouldn't say no to some Pilotwings and Wave Race Balance Board action either!

The point is that it feels that the Wii Balance Board really hasn't been given the time to shine yet. We welcome the introduction of MotionPlus as much as the next gamer, but want to see it working in tandem with the Balance Board to create some really great new games - not just acting as the Next Big Thing on the Wii's road to world domination, leaving the Balance Board fade away in the same way as (in Nintendo's sights so far at least) the Wii Zapper has.
